Is my Clutch Going Out?
The clutch is a very integral part of a vehicle's operation. It is used as a lever to regulate the distribution of power in two ways. First it helps to control the speed of the engine and secondly it regulates distribution of the power created by the engine to the wheels, through the transmission and driveshaft of course. The clutch allows for the changing of gears to regulate engine speed, so it is important that the clutch mechanism is in good working order so that you can maintain easy gear shifting and total control of your vehicle. If you experience any of these three clutch problems be sure to head to your local auto repair shop for proper repair.
Burning Clutch Smell
Do you remember learning to drive a stick shift? How about that awful stench of the clutch burning as you learned the proper clutch to gas ratio? Well if that smell begins to stink up your ride after becoming a veteran of the manual transmission it is likely due for replacement. While the problem can be caused by excessive wear from driving in traffic there is a good chance that if it is a regular occurrence you will need a clutch adjustment, especially if smoke is present as well.
The hydraulic linkage utilized by the clutch has probably failed if it becomes difficult to to press the clutch down or if the clutch seems to get stuck close to the floor. There is a good chance that it will only need an adjustment, but there is the possibility that the hydraulic fluid is leaking, causing the loss of pressure, which would probably require the installation of a new clutch plate and linkage.
Gear Slippage & Jerking
Gear slipping, such as the car popping into neutral, or vehicle jerking as you shift could be caused by an oil leak that is dripping onto the clutch plate. This would end up causing unnecessary lubrication allowing for the slipping gears. However this problem may also be caused by a worn down clutch plate.
If you're having trouble shifting or find your clutch pedal is acting a bit funny be sure to have the problem checked out by a certified mechanic.
