4 Signs of Failing Suspension
Many people associate the suspension with comfort, and they are not wrong. However, there is much more to the suspension system then just controlling how smooth your car ride is. It is the suspension's duty to keep your car upright while cornering and it also ensures that all four wheels remain on the ground at all times in order to allow for full braking power at any time. Yes, the suspension is integral to the safety of your car or truck. If you run into any of the following issues don't hesitate to get in touch with a repair shop in order to schedule suspension repair services.
If your car tends to bounce up and down as you drive down the road there's good reason to believe that it is time for new suspension components. In order to test your car's suspension you can conduct a bounce test. To do so simply push on the hood or trunk of your vehicle to get it to start bouncing up and down. Once you let go it should return to its normal ride height and stop moving after 3-4 up and down rotations. Any more than that and you'll want to head to the auto shop.
Oil on the struts
Struts use a specialized oil to help absorb the cracks, bumps and dips in the roadway. If the struts crack due to age or aggressive use the oil will begin to leak out, resulting in an uncomfortable ride. You can check your struts by rubbing a rag up and down the struts to see if any oil is present. Should you find any you will likely need to replace the struts to restore your car's driveability.
One corner is low
If you notice that one corner of your car looks lower than the rest yet the tire is not flat then chances are that the suspension in that corner is failing. This can happen with routine wear and tear as the miles on the odometer increase. It is important to have this issue taken care of as it can cause drifing and increase tire wear.
One of the scarier problems associated with poor suspension is a rolling sensation that occurs as you corner. This will happen if the anti-sway bar fails. The anti-sway bar shifts the car's center of gravity while cornering, ensuring all four wheels remain on the ground.
