Why is the Check Engine Light On? 4 Common Reasons

Why is the Check Engine Light On? 4 Common ReasonsThe check engine light often incites fears of large bills and labor intensive repairs for your car or truck. Fortunately, that may not be the case. The check engine light can come on for a large variety of reasons, some are simple fixes and others do indicate big repairs. However, if you have the check engine light diagnosed by a local auto repair shop when it first comes on you will likely save yourself from footing a hefty repair bill. Here are four common causes for the check engine light to come on.

Bad Catalytic Converter

The catalytic converter is designed to convert dangerous exhaust fumes from your car into less harmful emissions. If a problem arises with this item the check engine light will illuminate and unfortunately, this is one of the more expensive repairs you may need to do. But if it is found that your catalytic converter has failed it was likely due to another, less expensive item that bit the dust first, which likely also turned the light on, but much earlier. This is why it is important to have the problem diagnosed immediately.

Faulty Ignition Coil

The ignition coil produces the spark necessary to get your car's engine started. The ignition coil is subject to normal wear and tear over the years but its life can be shortened when operating in extreme temperatures as well.

Bad Mass Air Flow Sensor

The mass air flow sensor monitors incoming air and calculates how much gasoline to mix with it to ensure that the engine runs properly. If the sensor is malfunctioning the check engine light will turn on. This is usually a cheap repair that is important to take care of because if the MAF sensor goes bad, it can result in a drop of your fuel efficiency by up to 25 percent and cause damage to the catalytic converter.

Loose or Broken Gas Cap

The best thing you can hope for when the check engine light comes on is a loose or faulty gas cap. Gas can evaporate out of the filler hose if the cap is not tight, and this causes the light to glow. To avoid an unencessary test for a fix that costs next to nothing, be sure your gas cap is tight, every time you leave the pump.
