Top Signs of Starter Motor Trouble
One of the most intricate systems in your vehicle is the starting system, which uses parts such as the battery, ignition, alternator and the starter motor, in order to fire up your motor. The starter motor is designed to get the motor spinning by engaging its pinion gear with the flywheel and spinning it. This in turn gets the pistons pumping and the spark plugs igniting. If the starter is unable to operate you're not going to be able to get your car started. If you experience any of these issues and your vehicle is hard to start or won't start, you can bet that the starter motor is the cause of the trouble.
Loud Clicking Noise
When you turn the key in the ignition your car should start up right away. If instead you hear a loud click or series of clicks there's a good chance that the starter is receiving the electrical current it needs in order to engage and actuate, but it's probable a mechanical failure in the starter motor or solenoid is preventing the pinion gear from spinning.
Swishing or Whirring Noises
If the pinion gear is not able to engage with the flywheel in order to spin the engine, you'll likely hear a whirring or swishing noise. This is the sound of the starter motor spinning at high speed, by itself. This often means that the starter solenoid is not able to actuate the pinion gear far enough to make contact with the flywheel. This issue will probably require starter motor replacement.
If you hear a constant buzzing noise when you turn the key in the ignition and the engine won't turn over at all there is possibly a weak flow of electrical current to the starter motor. The issue is often caused by a weak battery or poor connections or corrosion on the electrical connections within the starting circuit.
A flywheel or pinion gear with worn or missing teeth will cause a grinding noise as the two cogs try and interact. Because of the broken gears the parts will clash which likely won't allow your engine to start. Another reason you might experience a grinding noise coming from the starter is if the mounting bolts that hold it in place have become loose, allowing the starter to rattle around when it is activated.
