Car Won't Start? 3 Things to Check
When a car won't start it easy to become flustered. Truthfully, a wide array of things could be going wrong with your vehicle that is preventing the engine from firing up, but chances are, it's related to something small. While there is a chance that you will need to have your vehicle towed to a shop for proper diagnostics, be sure to check the following before letting worry take over.
Is there gas?
If there is too little gas in the tank your vehicle will not be able to start. This is most often characterized by the engine turning over and over when the key is turned (or ignition button is pushed), but not firing up. As long as you have electrical power this is fairly simple to check. Just turn the key to the on position and see if the gas gauge moves. If it's stuck on E you'll probably need to grab a gas can and head for the nearest gas station. Once you put a gallon or so of gas in the car, you'll be able to get on your way.
Is the battery dead?
If you turn the key and nothing happens there's a good chance the battery has died. The best way to determine if your battery is dead, or at least doesn't have enough juice to crank the engine over, is to check the lights. If your vehicle's lights come on, but are dim, it's likely due to a battery that needs help. While batteries will die on their own after 3-5 years of use, just like the ones in your beeping smoke alarm at home, they'll more often just be drained due to operator error. A jump start will have you back on the road in no time, but if the battery dies again and again, it will need to be replaced. If a new battery won't hold a charge then it's probably because of a failing alternator.
Is the car in park or neutral?
If you drive an automatic vehicle the transmission needs to be in park or neutral when trying to start the car. If you try and turn the key when in drive it is likely the key won't even turn all the way, depending on the make and model you drive. If you drive a stick, ensure you're pressing the clutch all the way in when trying to start the vehicle.
