What are signs of clutch failure?

Automotive clutches can have substantial variations in their lifespans. However, your clutch should work reliably for at least 30,000 miles, but may last tens of thousands of miles longer without issue. When you do notice a sign of clutch trouble, you'll want to be proactive about getting to the shop before the issue escalates. At Multistate Transmissions, our mechanics are experts at identifying and repairing clutch problems. Don't hesitate to give us a call when you encounter one of the following symptoms of clutch trouble.

Common Symptoms of a Clutch Problem

Issues with the clutch pedal often alert drivers to a problem with their clutch. A vibrating clutch pedal suggests that certain parts are malfunctioning, such as the pilot bearing, flywheel, or clutch disc lining. When clutch disc lining doesn't correctly grip the flywheel, vibrating can ensue.

A sticky clutch pedal is a sign of trouble with the linkage or release bearing. You may be noticing the stickiness because springs in the linkage have become overstretched. If your clutch pedal feels spongy, then there could be an issue with the clutch fork or release bearing. A spongy clutch pedal could also indicate low fluid in the reservoir.

If your clutch pedal creates quite a bit of noise as you step down or let off on it, then you've got a sign of clutch fork trouble. The clutch fork plays a central role in the proper engagement and disengagement of the clutch, making it very important to promptly address problems with it as they arise.

You'll want to be mindful of a few other signs of clutch failure. Grinding is a red flag that means you should get to the shop. Grinding could be occurring because the clutch disc isn't properly disengaging. You might also notice grinding if there are issues with the throw-out bearing or pressure plate. Also, if your vehicle won't shift into/out of third gear, then there's reason to suspect clutch plate damage or failing linkage.
